Caring for a loved one with a disability is rewarding—but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. That’s why the NDIS includes support for carers too, through services like respite care and Short-Term Accommodation (STA).
If you’re a carer, understanding how these supports work can help you take a well-earned break while ensuring your loved one continues to receive safe, quality care.
In this post, we break down what NDIS respite and STA are, how they work, and how HiveCare can support you through it.
What is respite care?
Respite care is temporary support that allows carers to take a break from their usual caring responsibilities. It’s not about stepping away—it’s about recharging so you can continue providing care long-term.
NDIS-funded respite is most often included under the category of Short-Term Accommodation, which allows the person you support to stay somewhere else for a short period—usually up to 14 days at a time—with trained staff to support their daily needs.
What is Short-Term Accommodation (STA)?
STA is more than just a place to stay. It offers a safe, supportive environment where people with disability can enjoy a change of scenery, try new activities, meet new people, and gain independence.
STA includes:
- Accommodation in a safe, accessible home
- 24/7 personal care and support
- Meals and daily living assistance
- Community activities and social engagement
It can be planned in advance or used during unexpected situations, such as if you’re unwell or need to travel for an emergency.
When can respite or STA be funded by the NDIS?
STA is usually funded under the NDIS category of Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life) and is available when:
- The person you support has a goal in their plan related to building independence or social participation
- You, as the carer, need short-term relief from your caring role
- The participant would benefit from developing new skills or experiences in a different setting
Note: The NDIS doesn’t fund respite specifically for the benefit of the carer—but it does fund STA when it helps the participant reach their goals and build capacity.
Benefits of STA for both Carers and Participants
For Carers:
- Time to rest, travel or focus on your own health and wellbeing
- Reduced risk of burnout
- Peace of mind knowing your loved one is in safe hands
For Participants:
- A chance to experience a new environment
- Increased confidence and independence
- Social interaction and community participation
