If you’re new to the NDIS, or you’ve recently received your plan, you might be wondering: “What exactly is a Support Coordinator—and do I need one?”
The NDIS can open up a world of supports and opportunities, but understanding how to navigate your plan, connect with services, and get the most out of your funding can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s where a Support Coordinator comes in.
At Hive Care, we work with participants every day to make navigating the NDIS simpler, clearer, and more empowering. Here’s what you need to know.
What does a Support Coordinator do?
A Support Coordinator is someone who helps you understand and implement your NDIS plan. They work alongside you—not for you—to connect you with the right providers and services, build your confidence, and ensure you’re getting value from your plan. Think of them as your NDIS guide or personal navigator.
Their role typically includes:
• Explaining your NDIS plan and what you’re funded for
• Helping you choose providers that match your goals and needs
• Coordinating services and managing bookings
• Supporting you to build your skills and independence
• Helping you prepare for NDIS plan reviews
• Problem-solving and navigating challenges (e.g. provider disputes or changes)
What’s the difference between a Support Coordinator and a Plan Manager?
This is a commonly asked question. These two roles are often confused.
• A Plan Manager helps you manage your NDIS funding—processing invoices, tracking spending, and helping you stay on budget.
• A Support Coordinator helps you manage your supports—finding, connecting with, and coordinating services that suit your needs and goals.
Some participants have both, while others may only have one, depending on their plan.
Do I have Support Coordination in my plan?
Not everyone automatically receives Support Coordination. It must be approved by the NDIS and included in your plan under Capacity Building – Support Coordination.
You’re more likely to receive Support Coordination funding if:
- You’re new to the NDIS and need help getting started
- Your situation is complex (e.g. multiple supports or health needs)
- You don’t have someone else (like a family member or carer) to coordinate supports
- You’ve recently changed circumstances and need help adjusting
- You’re working toward greater independence
If you’re not sure whether it’s in your plan, ask your LAC (Local Area Coordinator), NDIS planner, or Plan Manager—or feel free to reach out to us at Hive Care, and we can help review your plan with you.
How can a Support Coordinator help me day-to-day?
Here’s how working with a Support Coordinator can make a real difference:
• Finding the right support worker or therapy provider
• Scheduling appointments and communicating with providers
• Linking you to community groups, social programs or employment support
• Helping you speak up and make decisions about your own care
• Making sure you don’t miss out on valuable services or unspent funding
Ultimately, their job is to build your capacity, so over time, you feel more confident and in control of your own supports.
Can I choose my own Support Coordinator?
Yes, absolutely. You have the right to choose a Support Coordinator that:
• Understands your culture, language and values
• Listens to what you want
• Respects your choices and goals
• Supports your independence
At Hive Care, our Support Coordinators take the time to get to know you, build trust, and create a personalised plan that helps you achieve your goals—not just tick boxes.
